Heading out on the water this summer? Here are a few ways you can help protect river wildlife
During warmer months, lower water levels can increase the chance of you coming into contact with gravel beds.
These areas provide important spawning grounds for fish and other species.
Small changes to the way we paddle can make a big difference
Avoid gravel beds in rivers where possible.
- Be aware that low water levels increase the risk of contact with the gravel river bed.
- Avoid your paddle or craft scraping across gravel areas, especially when getting on and off the river. If you encounter a gravel bed while paddling, back paddle and find a deeper channel.
- If using a pole to propel an open canoe, revert to a paddle on sections of river with a gravel bed.]
- Follow local guidance on where to launch and get out
- Once spawning season has finished, continue to share the water responsibly with anglers
